“Wrinkle Relaxer’s” are a natural, purified protein that helps create a smoother, improved appearance by relaxing muscles that cause wrinkling around the eyes and on the forehead.

Treatment of Frown, Forehead and Eye Expression Lines using wrinkle relaxers.

“Wrinkle Relaxers” have been used for over ten years for the treatment of a variety of medical conditions such as cerebral palsy, facial spasms, eye and bladder problems and excessive sweating.

To improve expression lines, small amounts of “Wrinkle Relaxer’s” are injected into the facial muscles that cause frowning and squinting this works by precisely inhibiting the nerve impulses, which cause these tiny muscles to contract. After treatment the skin overlying these muscles remains smooth while untreated muscles continue to contract normally. “Wrinkle Relaxer’s do not affect sensation to touch.

The treatment takes only a few minutes. Small amounts of the solution are injected into several locations in each area requiring treatment using a very fine needle. Many people say this feels like a mosquito or ant bite. No sedation or local anaesthetic is required and you will be able to drive and resume normal activities immediately after treatment. Foundation will be removed during skin cleansing prior to treatment but can be reapplied immediately afterwards if required. The effects of the treatment begin to appear within a few days, but maximal improvement may take two weeks to occur. Occasionally, un-treated muscles near the treated area may try to compensate for the reduced ability to frown. Expression lines in these areas may become slightly more obvious because of this increased activity but will usually respond to a small additional treatment.

“Wrinkle Relaxer’s are stabilised in human albumin. This is in a highly purified form that has been approved as safe by all relevant international and national regulatory bodies. Human albumin is used as a stabiliser in a wide range of childhood vaccines including rubella, measles, mumps and chickenpox. No case of transmission of viral disease has ever been identified for albumin.

Side Effects of Wrinkle Relaxers

Temporary discomfort, bruising or swelling may occur at the treated sites. Treatment of frown lines may result in temporary droop of an eyelid or eyebrow in 1 to 2% of people.

Eyelid droop can be corrected with eye drops as it settles over a few weeks. Slight asymmetry of the lower face may occur in less than 1% of people after treatment of the crow’s feet muscles. This effect is usually not obvious to other people and recovery can be anticipated within 3 to 5 weeks.

Approximately 1% of people undergoing “Wrinkle Relaxing” treatment will experience a severe headache. Rarely, a skin rash or allergic reaction may occur following injection.

Contradictions to Wrinkle Relax Treatment

“Wrinkle Relaxer’s” are contraindicated if you are pregnant, breast feeding or planning to fall pregnant within the next four months.

Though no harmful effects to the unborn or breast feeding baby have been reported, studies in certain animals have shown evidence of an increased occurrence of foetal damage after “Wrinkle Relaxing” injections. The significance of this is considered uncertain in humans.

The treatment is not suitable for those with certain neurological or muscular diseases and should be postponed in the presence of infection near the treatment area.

Precautions

Certain antibiotics can augment the effects of “Wrinkle Relaxer’s”. Please inform us if you are currently taking antibiotics.

There is a theoretical risk that “Wrinkle Relaxer’s” may interfere with drugs used during general anaesthesia. Therefore, we recommend that wrinkle relaxers not be performed within two weeks of surgery requiring a General Anaesthetic. Surgery can affect the positioning of the facial muscles that must be relaxed to achieve maximum benefit from the treatment.

Please let us know if you have had facial surgery in the past.

What results can i expect

“Wrinkle Relaxer’s are suitable for treatment of wrinkles caused by facial expression. It is not suitable for wrinkling which is obvious when the facial muscles are at rest. Wrinkles are not plumped up as they are following treatment with injectable fillers such as collagen.

Some patients may require such alternate treatments alone or in combination with “Wrinkle Relaxer’s to obtain the desired results. “Wrinkle Relaxer’s” do not improve loose or sagging skin and does not serve the same function as a facelift. Your suitability for treatment will be assessed at your initial consultation. About 2% of patients are resistant to “Wrinkle Relaxer’s” and a similar proportion may develop resistance after repeat treatments.

Such resistance cannot be predicted. Some people subconsciously recruit muscles above the eyebrows, which cannot be treated using “Wrinkle Relaxer’s”, to assist frowning. In such people some frowning movement may be apparent after successful treatment of the main frown muscles between the brows. A follow-up treatment, two weeks after the initial treatment, may be recommended in some patients in order to maximise the result.

How long do results last

Initially, most people require repeat treatments every 3 to 5 months to maintain their result. After 3 to 5 consecutive treatments some patients will find the effect lasts longer and repeat treatments may only be required each 6 to 12 months. Others will be more resistant to “Wrinkle Relaxer’s” and continue to require more frequent treatment.

After Care Instructions

Do not rub the injection site as this may spread the solution to adjacent muscles. Do not lie down for 4 hours as this may have the same effect. Use of the treated muscles after an hour or so may aid the uptake and effect of the treatment. Asprin, anti- inflammatories and alcohol are not recommended after treatment as this may increase the chance of bruising.
